Bulgaria’s Andrey Gurov Assumes Office as Snap Vote Looms
Acting President Iliana Iotova presided over the swearing-in ceremony and simultaneously announced that snap parliamentary elections would be held on April 19.
Gurov, a deputy governor at the Bulgarian National Bank, accepted the mandate to lead the transitional administration last week, stepping in to steer the country through one of its most turbulent political stretches in recent memory.
Bulgaria has been without a functioning government since former Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov tendered his cabinet's resignation on Dec. 11, 2025, following weeks of sustained public protests that paralyzed his administration.
The political crisis deepened in mid-December when the president launched the constitutional process for forming a new government, conducting rounds of consultations with parliamentary blocs in the 51st National Assembly. After three consecutive attempts to forge a governing coalition collapsed, constitutional provisions obligated the president to install a caretaker cabinet and call early elections within a 60-day window.
Adding further upheaval to the country's leadership, former President Rumen Radev stepped down last month, transferring presidential responsibilities to Vice President Iotova, who now steers the nation toward the April vote.
